How to keep your tattoo looking fresh when your skin’s either melting or flaking off.
Your tattoo may be forever, but your skin sure isn’t.Between sunburns, snowstorms, sweat, and sweaters, the seasons do their best to ruin your body art. Here’s how to keep your tattoos looking crisp, smooth, and sexy whether you’re sweating through your crop top or buried in a hoodie cocoon.
☀️ SUMMER: Protect the Ink, Not Just the Thirst Trap
Sunscreen. Every. Damn. Day.
UV rays are like tattoo bleach in disguise — they’ll fade your art faster than your ex’s promises. Once your tattoo’s healed (at least 6 weeks old), slather on SPF 30+ daily (we swear by MAD RABBIT DEFEND). Reapply every few hours if you’re outside, even if you “don’t burn.”If you can’t commit to sunscreen, you’re not ready for tattoos. Sorry, babe.
Sweat ≠ Aftercare
A new tattoo is an open wound. Gyms, beaches, and pools are basically petri dishes. Keep your fresh ink out of water and heavy sweat for at least two weeks — or longer if you heal slow.
When you shower, wash gently with a mild cleanser. Don’t scrub. Don’t soak. Don’t use that loofah you’ve had since 2019.
💚 At GRIM, we use pro-grade cleansers and wraps (like Electrum Cleanse + Dermor Barrier) that keep your tattoo clean and protected while you do absolutely nothing. The dream.
Moisturize or Die Trying
Hydrated skin = glowing tattoos.Drink your water, stop pretending iced coffee counts, and use a light, fragrance-free lotion every day. Greasy isn’t cute, but cracked is worse.
❄️ WINTER: Dry Skin Is the Devil
Moisturize Like You Mean It
Cold air and indoor heat are your tattoos’ mortal enemies. When your skin’s dry, it tightens, cracks, and your tattoos start looking… tired. Switch to a thicker lotion in winter — think “rich girlfriend energy,” not “sad hotel soap.”
Stop Boiling Yourself Alive
Scalding showers feel amazing but destroy your skin barrier. Stick to warm water, pat dry, and moisturize immediately after. Bonus points if you’re using something gentle and unscented — your skin’s already been through enough.
Fabric Burnout
Layering is cute until your tight jeans rub your new thigh tattoo raw.Stick to soft, breathable fabrics while healing. If your tattoo’s still peeling, it’s not ready for skinny jeans, babe.
🌦️ YEAR-ROUND RULES FROM YOUR FAVES AT GRIM
Don’t pick, peel, or scratch your tattoo.
Keep it clean, keep it moisturized, keep it protected.
SPF isn’t optional, it’s religion.
Touch-ups happen — that’s part of the process.
Good tattoos age like bad girls — unapologetically and with maintenance.
Bottom Line
Whether you’re sweating, freezing, or somewhere in between — your tattoo deserves care. Protect it like the luxury item it is.Because dull, cracked ink? Not the vibe.
Come see us for touch-ups, new pieces, or just to brag about how good your healed tattoos look — we won’t judge. (We’ll probably post you.)
