MAT

He / Him

Heaphy

Neo-Traditional & Lettering Tattoo Artist in Hamilton

Mat is a complicated man, and our relationship with him exists somewhere between deep affection and the occasional urge to gently strangle him. (Although, the latter is less and less)

He is an incredibly talented tattoo artist, genuinely hilarious, and notoriously incapable of knowing when a joke has gone far enough. And by “far enough,” we mean way, way, waaaaaay too far.

Case in point: once, after Memphis got off a plane and turned her phone back on, she was greeted by approximately 500 text messages because Mat had put stencil in everyone’s gloves. He was not fired, but he was responsible for replacing roughly twenty boxes of gloves, which felt fair.

Mat has been tattooing for over 14 years and specializes in freehand custom lettering, neo-traditional tattoos, and large-scale custom work. He loves creating huge, oversized tattoos and freehanding designs directly onto the body to ensure perfect flow and placement. He has a particularly strong eye for dramatic compositions and is known for creating some of the sickest, most badass back pieces in the studio.

He is, without question, the shop troublemaker. He is also a big part of why the studio is as fun as it is. We have, at various points, had to ban him from fireworks and Nerf guns at work — a sentence that truly only makes sense in a tattoo studio.

When Mat isn’t tattooing, he spends his time with his wife and sons, building a custom motorcycle, and driving a big lifted truck (we are not implying anything — this is simply a factual statement). He is a true artist in the most annoying way possible and can draw things directly from his brain with alarming ease. He still prefers drawing on paper, which is increasingly rare in tattooing and, very cool.
